Default Science of Motivation

This is an interesting video about studies on motivation. I see a lot of parallels between this and TI.

I noticed this post was listed as being by Coach Betsy, but it was by Terry. She apparently had been using my computer on the TI site before I posted and her signin was still in effect.

I only had time to watch the first couple of minutes, but have read Dan Pink's book "Drive." His thesis is that the 3 key elements of intrinsic motivation are Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. While his book is intended mainly for business people, I saw clear purposes as TI is consciously designed to help swimmers gain a sense of all three. Mastery and Purpose are fairly obvious. Autonomy is beautifully illustrated by this Forum - that you don't need to rely on an "expert" to improve at swimming, but can gain the understanding, clarity and wisdom to effect your own improvement.

I think of the forum as distributed knowledge. Like the difference between electricity generated and supplied by a Utility Company, or every house having solar panels feeding into the grid and taking the energy they need from it.
