How do you go from swimming 2.4 miles in 64 minutes one year to under 49 minutes the next year? It’s like that old joke: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? PRACTICE.

But practice what? Do you swim 5-6 times a week piling up the 10,000-12,000 yards? Not if you’re almost hitting the big “six oh” like me. Do you weight train like a body builder? Not if you’re 5’8”, 135lbs, and you have arms more like Olive Oyl than Popeye; I could easily pose for artists drawing stick figures.

This practice targets skills illustrated in Chapter 5 of the new Easy Freestyle DVD. It begins with practice of drills and rehearsals designed to make your arm recovery more compact and relaxed. This will help channel energy and momentum from recovery forward in a straight line, which corrects common tendencies to swing the arm outside or cross the centerline on entry.

On Saturday, August 16th, Total Immersion had the great pleasure of sponsoring the Betsy Owens Memorial Swims at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, New York. The event was comprised of three open water swims: the one-mile, Mini-Mile (which was actually a half-mile non-competitive swim), and the two-mile. All swims took place along a submerged cable which made navigating a breeze.
