I decided to "swim well" after 9/11/2001. Swimming was the thing that kept me going, that seemed to keep me attached to my body. Also, after a 1990 car accident with multiple whiplash, the swimming seemed to be the best fit for getting in shape. Water has always been the place where I could disappear. On a boat or in water, in a lake, the ocean or in a pool. Swimming is one of the best things I have ever done in my life and my intent is to pass on that feeling of joy, accomplishment and well-being.I am a professional cellist, cello teacher, artist and, most recently, a swim coach. I coach for the Curl-Burke (J&M Alexandria) Swim Club and teach swim lessons privately through the Fairfax County Parks at Lee District Pool in Alexandria, VA.Ten years ago I found Terry and TI online. I like doing things well and decided it was time to learn more about swimming and to see where it would take me. Since then I have studied swimming with Beth Baker, Mark Murray, and taken classes through TI and GoSwim. I am an ASCA Level 2 coach and now, happily, a TI certified instructor. I joined my first swim team at age 45, swimming for John Flanagan. Since then I've participated in pool meets and open water swims, something I never would have envisioned when I was young. It is the best!My cello teaching (I currently teach at the Washington Conservatory of Music) has honed my skills of teaching technique and discovering the best ways to make things work for each student, child or adult, in the pool or on the cello. As a visual artist I have my own website, swimmuse.com, which features swim, music and cat art--some of the things I enjoy the most! My bachelor and masters degrees are in cello performance. Undergrad studies began at the University of Michigan and finished at Boston University. My Masters is from the University of Maryland. I've performed at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, the Smithsonian, as well as the Corcoran and Phillips galleries. I enjoy playing in the pit orchestra at Arena Stage whenever they have need for a cellist. So that is some of what I'm about. My husband Alan and cats Petra and Sammy are other happiness creators in my life.

Visualization: and Translation: From and On Deck

This morning I am musing on yet another coaching experience. It is not a new one really, but last night pushed me toward a stronger desire than ever to be a clear translator on deck and in the pool. This …

Cello and Maho Bay

After the Maho Bay workshop I came home with ideas about teaching the cello better. Swim coaching has taught me a lot about teaching with a lot more orderly approach than what I learned studying cello. Because I was a …

Am I Even Close to Ready?

Oh boy…not the best week for practicing a lot so I guess I am stuck being content with smart. Of course I know that is better. While TI has moved past lots of full length 25’s and 50’s of drills …

The Current Adventure

And so, it is January 8, 2012. In a week I will be in Maho Bay working and playing with open water swim techniques with Terry and crew. I am so ready! My husband will be ready to enjoy lounging …
